HOPPS
The Project
All proceeds from our benefit concerts go to HOPPS – “Häusliche onkologische-pädiatrische Pflege Stuttgart” (paediatric oncology home care Stuttgart), a model project of the Olgahospital Stuttgart that is unique in all of Germany.
Physicians experienced in oncology and palliative care, together with paediatric nurses from the Olgahospital, lovingly care for children and adolescents with cancer as well as children in palliative situations – in and around Stuttgart. The goal: to give the young patients as much time as possible outside the hospital. Specialist staff travel to the families’ homes, take over care there, and train the parents so that as few hospital stays as possible are needed.
The project has existed for 25 years and was funded entirely by donations until 2010. Since 2010 it has been partially funded by the health insurance providers – unfortunately only at around 50 %. HOPPS still depends on donations.

25 years on the road for families

The home visits are only one part of the work – much of it happens “behind the scenes”: applications to the health insurance providers, organising medical aids, documentation. One example shows what this means in practice: a single mum with a second child of kindergarten age, almost an hour’s drive from the Olgäle. A HOPPS visit spares her many a long trip to Stuttgart and gives her a little bit of normality with her two boys.
Sleeping in, meeting friends, having lunch at grandma’s, or simply recharging at home – that is incredibly valuable, especially during a long course of treatment. This is what HOPPS makes possible.
